On July 15, 1937 by the Decree of People's Commissars Soviet of Ukrainian SSR a State Pedagogical Institute was established in the city of Stalino (Donetsk). Its first director was Evdokymenko Olekasandr Vasylyovych, who in 1938 was subjected to repression and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. He died in 1941. It was only in 1956 that the Supreme Court of the USSR rehabilitated Evdokymenko O.V. posthumously.
There were 2 faculties - historical (71 student) and philological (67 students) - and 5 chairs in the University then. Studies were conducted in the educational building situated on Teatralny prospect (now the building of Trade Institute).
Ksenofontov Serhiy Oleksiyovych (1895-1984) became the second director who ran the Institute for a long period (1940-1961). Starting from 1961 the Institute was headed by the doctor of historical sciences, Professor Khoroshailov Mykola Fedorovych (1920-1999).
In 1964 Donetsk Pedagogical Institute was subordinated to Kharkiv State University and received a status of Donetsk branch of Kharkiv State University named after O.M. Horkiy, its director being Khoroshailov M.F.
On May 28, 1965 the Soviet of Ministers of the USSR enacted a Decree on organising Donetsk State University (DonSU) based on Donetsk branch of Kharkiv State University named after O.M. Horkiy. It appointed the full-member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR, doctor of chemical sciences, Professor Lytvynenko Leonid Mykhailovych to be the first rector of DonSU (1965-1968).
In 1965 post-graduate studies were launched at the University with only 16 students at first. This was the year when faculties of biology and physics as well as students' campus were built. Learned society, established in 1951 and numbering 200 students primarily, increased in number up to 1000 persons by this time.
Doctor of physical-and-mathematical sciences, Professor Shevlyakov Yuriy Andriyovych was appointed the second rector of the University, who managed the institution since 1968 till 1970. In this period the main 12-storey building began to be constructed. The third rector of the University was doctor of technical sciences, Professor Tymoshenko Hryhoryy Markovych (1970-1975). He was followed by the doctor of historical sciences, Professor Ponomarenko Hryhoryy Yakovych, who was the rector since 1975 till 1986. During this period the canteen "Brihantina", the recreation centre "Nauka", the sanatorium-preventorium "Badyorist" and a swimming pool were built.
Since 1986 the University has been managed by the doctor of physical-and-mathematical sciences, Professor, full-member of the NAS of Ukraine Shevchenko Volodymyr Pavlovych.
On September 11, 2000 by the Decree of the President of Ukraine the University was awarded the status of national HEI.
In 1972 a Museum of University's history was opened in the main building. Its exposition is divided into three sections: the history of Pedagogical Institute, the history of the University and the history of the faculties. The exposition is the base for educational and research activities of students, post-graduates and teachers.
The Museum is situated in the main building (room 202). Its director is Tarnavska Olha Oleksiivna. Phone: 99-97-85. Museum's working hours are the same as the University's ones.
