In this book the well-known Russian archaeologist L. S. Klejn analyses the works of the Swedish archaeologist Mats Malmer (1921 – 2007) who has been reckoned among the Great Archaeologists. His creation is poorly known in Russia and in the world, and the familiarisation with his attainments will help us to enrich our methodical armoury. Malmer has perfected typological method of Montelius who had been called a century ago ‘The King of Archaeology’. The author holds that it is with Malmer that modernisation of archaeology begins, but the founders of the New Archaeology were named Americans and British. Trying to comprehend this, the author considers critically Malmer’s methodology and shows why the preferences were given to the others. As soon as Malmer’s faults are repeated by many archaeologists, the critical analysis of hist works is a good lesson for everyone.

The book is aimed for archaeologists and anthropologists but will be probably curious for all who is interested in methodology of science.
