THEORETICAL ARCHAEOLOGY, VOL.2. MONTELIUS FORMULA

DONETSK NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

DONETSK - 2010

Monelius Formula and Da Vinci Code have nothing in common except that both books tell on secrets of mastery and the attempts to unravel them. No murder, no chase, no heresy, no meddling of church or state power, no dashingly twisted intrigue are there in the subject of this book. There is on what to think over for a man having a trend to puzzle out complicated collisions. Of course, if problems of archaeology are interesting to him.

The Swedish archaeologist Montelius was called ‘King of Archaeology’. In the encyclopaedia Great Archaeologists his biography has been placed. The typological method invented by him is expressed by a simple formula ABCDEFG. In actual fact his formula is at all not so simple. Montelius died in 1921. In the very year another Swedish archaeologist, Mats Malmer, has born, and he also is present in the encyclopaedia Great Archaeologists, the only among Scandinavian archaeologists of the XX century. He perfected the typological method of Montelius, has broaden its application. Yet his ideas of modernisation of archaeology were not accepted by the discipline. Other people became leaders of the New Archaeology. There comes a suspicion he has not unriddled Montelius formula and just his innovative ideas prevented. Al this has happened on the eyes of my generation, and one has to look into.
