The university has more than 25 thousand students and provides the education on natural science, humanitarian and economic profiles. The university students may graduate with bachelor, specialist and master diplomas in 42 specialties.

 At present Donetsk National University is a part of Donetsk Scientific Center and Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Its teaching staff collaborating with scientists of academy institutes educates specialists in 55 professions.

The university carries out scientific researches in 15 main directions of fundamental and applied science. There are 15 acknowledged scientific schools.

Donetsk National University has 72 departments. They include:

The university has established close relations with 26 universities around the world. Donetsk National University has gained a membership in Europe Universities Association as well as in two international organizations (Eurasian and AIMOS). It took part in several European scientific programs. In 2004 Donetsk National University was among the first Ukrainian institutions to sign Magna Charta of European universities.

The facilities for education comprise 12 buildings with the total area of learner's position of 36518 square meters, IT center, modern training and scientific laboratories, 55 computer classes, the biggest library among the higher educational establishments of the Donetsk region (which has 7 reading rooms for 500 persons). The total library stock is almost 1.1 mln volumes. Students can use accommodation in well-found hostels. There is a canteen for 750 persons, a medical care and vacation facility, 50-metre swimming pool, sport and sanitary resort Nauka, as well as a resort located in Dronivka village.
